Politicians and experts discuss 'Borders in a post-Brexit Europe'

On 14 July, we hosted a panel discussion at the 24th International Conference of Europeanists, at the University of Glasgow, to explore the challenges (and possible solutions) faced by governments (national and devolved), businesses and citizens around the issue of borders as Brexit negotiations get under way.

The panel consisted of Catherine Stihler MEP, Mark Drakeford AM, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government; Dr Alasdair Allan MSP, Scottish Government Minister for International Development and Europe; Dr Katy Hayward, Queens University Belfast; and Francis Jacobs, former Head of Office at the European Parliament Information Office in Dublin.

The speakers presented their expectations and concerns in regards to issues such as customs and movement of people, goods and services between the UK and the EU on the island of Ireland and beyond. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session with the audience, who expressed unease about the months ahead and were keen to explore ways in which to minimise the impact of Brexit.

We also had a stall at the Conference to share information about the European Parliament.
