EU Budget: Deal or No Deal? With George Lyon MEP

On Friday 16th November, the European Parliament Office in Edinburgh hosted a talk and Q&A session with George Lyon MEP entitled: 'The EU Budget; Deal or No Deal?' Mr Lyon is Vice President of the European Parliament Budgets Committee and a Member of the "President's Strategy Group" on the EU long-term budget (the Multi-Annual Financial Framework).  In addressing the controversial topic, discussed the broad political issues that will shape the eventual EU budget as well as the implications for Scotland. He said the outcome of the budget negotiations would have consequences in terms of inward payments to Scotland on regional funding, farm payments or university research funding, just to name a few.  Mr Lyon wrote an article which accompanied the event in which he said: "I want to see more financial power transferred to the Scottish Parliament so that we can determine far more closely how much money we want to spend instead of being entirely dependent on grants from the Westminster Parliament."
