MEPs meet in plenary session in Strasbourg for the first session of the New Year, from 16-19 January.
Among the highlights of the agenda:
Electing a new EP President
Parliament's first act in 2012 will be to elect its new President, 14 Vice-Presidents and five Quaestors. The three candidates declared so far to succeed Jerzy Buzek are Martin Schulz (S&D, DE), Diana Wallis (ALDE, UK) and Nirj Deva (ECR, UK). After being elected on Tuesday, the new President will hold a press conference (Tuesday, Wednesday).
Denmark's "Europe at work" programme and priorities for its six-month Presidency of the Council will be presented by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Wednesday). Economic and financial issues, and notably the Eurozone debt crisis and Euro pact negotiations, top the agenda. The Presidents of the Parliament, the Commission and the Council will give a joint press conference after the debate.
Fiscal stability union
Parliament will set out its demands for the new international agreement on a fiscal stability union (vote Thursday). On Monday, the Economic and Monetary Affairs and Constitutional Affairs committees meet jointly to discuss the latest draft agreement with MEPs on the drafting group.
MEPs will vote on legislation, already negotiated with Member States, to improve collection and recycling of electronic and electrical waste and cut red tape for producers (debate Wednesday, vote Thursday).
Up to 50% of food is wasted in EU households, and at least half of this wastage is avoidable, says a draft resolution calling for measures to halve food wastage in Europe (vote Thursday).

Two dossiers steered by Brian Simpson (Lab, North West) will be voted in plenary on Thursday.
Agreement on certain aspects of air services between the European Union and the Republic of Indonesia
This is a Recommendation on the draft Council Decision on the conclusion of an Agreement between the European Union and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on certain aspects of air services.
Memorandum of Cooperation between the European Union and the International Civil Aviation Organisation
This is a Recommendation on the draft Council decision on the conclusion of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the European Union and the International Civil Aviation Organisation providing a framework for enhanced cooperation, and laying down procedural arrangements related thereto.
Other topics to be discussed:
Political developments in Hungary will be debated with Commission President Barroso. MEPs will comment on Hungary's controversial new constitution (in force since 1 January 2012), the laws implementing it and other measures taken by Viktor Orbán's government (Wednesday).
The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will meet Mario Draghi in his capacity as Chair of the European Systemic Risk Board, which monitors the build up of potential economic imbalances. The focus will be on competitiveness disparities among the Eurozone economies (Monday).
