MEPs return to Brussels on 3 December a full week of committee meetings and political group meetings in preparation for the last plenary of the year from 10-13 December in Strasbourg.


Committee highlights:

Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU: Delegation visit to Ireland
The delegation of MEPs from the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality will visit Dublin on 29-30.11.12 on the occasion of Ireland's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Members will meet representatives of the Houses of the Oirechtas, of Irish government bodies as well as those of civil society active in the field of women's rights and gender equality.

Establishment of a Single Supervisory Mechanism and feasibility of Stability Bonds
On 29.11.12 from 09.00 - 11.00, Members of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs are due to vote on establishing a European Supervisory Authority (the European Banking Authority), on the Feasibility of introducing Stability Bonds, on the action programme for taxation in the European Union (FISCALIS, 2014-2020) and on enhanced cooperation on the financial transactions tax.

Joint debate on the governance on the Single Market
On 29.11.12, Members of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection will hold a joint debate with the European Commission on the legislative draft report of Andreas SCHWAB (EPP, DE) on the governance of the single market, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the legislation, transposition, implementation, application and enforcement of the internal market regulatory framework.

EU Special Representative for Human Rights and EU Fundamental Rights Agency
On 28.11.12, Mr Stavros Lambrinidis will brief MEPs on the Sub-Committee on Human rights for the first time on the priorities and the mandate of the EU Special Representative for Human Rights. In addition, the director of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, Mr Morten Kjærum, will discuss the internal-external coherence of the EU's fundamental rights policy with MEPs, on 29.11.12.

Petitons with UK interest:

  • No. 813/2008 by Brian John (British), on alleged breaches of the general principles governing the activity of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in connection with the examination of the applications for Genetically Modified foods (in the presence of the petitioner) and No. 436/2010 by Brian John (British), on formal protest against the Commission draft regulation on implementing rules concerning the applications for authorisation of genetically modified food and feed in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council and amending Regulations No (EC) 641/2004 and (EC) No 1981/2006 (in the presence of the petitioner)
  • No. 210/2012 by A. G. (British), on the alleged application of restrictive tax measures on non-resident citizens in Portugal when acquiring property outside their national territory.
  • No. 307/2012 by Marco Picardi (British), on his call for the EU to sign up to the UN Due diligence guidelines for the responsible supply chain of minerals from red flag locations to mitigate the risk of providing direct or indirect support for conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
