Brexit progress, Sakharov Prize 2017 and external border checks – this week at the European Parliament.

The MEPs are in Strasbourg this week for a plenary session full to the brim. The echoes of the EU summit will be heard with Presidents Tusk and Juncker briefing the MEPs on the outcomes. The winner of the Sakharov Prize will be announced and decisions on checks on external EU borders will be made. Find out more below:



Future of Europe/October summit
MEPs will discuss the outcome of the 19-20 October European summit with Council President Donald Tusk and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Expect Brexit to pop up as the discussion will focus on a roadmap for the future of Europe. (Tuesday 8am)

Sakharov Prize 2017 The winner of the 2017 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought will be announced in plenary. The finalists are: Aura Lolita Chavez Ixcaquic, Democratic Opposition in Venezuela and Dawit Isaak (Thursday, 11am).

External Border Checks MEPs are set to vote on the introduction of an electronic entry/exit system to replace manual passport checks at the Schengen area’s external borders. The new system aims to stop illegal entry and track over-stays. (Debate and vote Wednesday)
