Plenary week at the European Parliament

MEPs are on their way to Strasbourg this morning for the first plenary session in October. Here are the highlights to look forward to.

EU summit. MEPs will discuss on Tuesday their priorities for the 18 October meeting of EU heads of state or government in Brussels, which is set to focus on migration, internal security and the state of play of the negotiations over the terms of the UK’s withdrawal agreement, with little more than six months to go before Brexit.

Cutting support for Turkey. MEPs will vote to cancel €70 million in pre-accession funds earmarked for Turkey, as no improvements in the fields of rule of law, democracy, human rights and press freedom have been made. On vote on Tuesday.

Cleaner cars by 2030. Parliament will vote on a new law setting a 45% target, proposed by the Environment Committee, for reducing carbon dioxide emissions for new cars by 2030, with an intermediate target of 20% by 2025. Carmakers would also have to increase the market share of electric cars and low- emission vehicles. They will debate on Tuesday and vote Wednesday.
