MEPs return to Brussels on 25 February for committee meetings.

 

Committee highlights:

Public hearing on tobacco products
The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will hold a public hearing connected to the legislative proposal establishing a Tobacco Products Directive on the 25.02.13. Institutional representatives, main stakeholders, health and other experts will exchange views on the subject. The hearing will be webstreamed and can be followed live via the EuroparlTV

Conference on Democracy in the European Union
The Committee on Constitutional Affairs is hosting a European Union Democracy Observatory Conference on Democracy in the European Union on 26.02.13. The first session deals with political foundations at the European Level, promoting democratic political culture in the EU. The second session focuses on access to electoral rights (citizenship, residence and the franchise in local, regional, national and European elections).

Debate on euro adoption by Latvia; reform of the EU banking sector
The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will host Latvian Minister of Finance A.Vilks and I. Rimšēvičs, Governor of the Central Bank of Latvia, to discuss the prospects of the adoption of the euro by Latvia as of 1 January 2014. Following this debate, Members in ECON will also hold first discussions on the reform of the EU banking sector. This meeting will be held on 26.02.13.

Vote on EU ETS temporary derogation for aviation emissions
The legislative report on the "Stop the Clock" proposal for a temporary derogation from the EU Emissions Trading System on the obligations to flights operating to and from the EU will be voted on 26.02.13 in the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. The proposal had been made in view of International Civil Aviation Organisation Assembly of September 2013, where progress on reducing international aviation emissions is expected to be made.
