MEPs return to Brussels on 28 January for committee meetings and political group meetings.


Committee highlights:

European Semester
MEPs and 100 national MPs will debate how to improve "European Semester" arrangements for EU-wide economic policy coordination, ahead of the 7-8 February EU summit which formally kicks off the process for this year. It will take place from 28-30 January including three interparliamentary committee meetings organised by the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Committee on Budgets. (Monday-Wednesday)

MEPs on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and and Committee on Development will debate developments in the Horn of Africa with Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. (Thursday)

New Parliament's calendar for 2013
During the plenary sitting of 16 January 2013, Members voted on a new version of Parliament's calendar for 2013, with 12 plenary sessions in Strasbourg of equal duration. This vote follows a ruling by the European Court of Justice, which annulled Parliament's original vote (in March 2011) on the calendar 2013. The new calendar will also include changes in the schedule for committee meetings.

The EP Press Service is holding a seminar for journalists on 30.01.13, giving an overview of the EU Asylum Legislative Package which aims to establish a Common European Asylum System. Parliament's work in this field is being steered by the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.  The panels with stakeholders, starting at 11.45

Plenary preparations
Parliament's political groups will prepare for the plenary session in Strasbourg. The plenary agenda includes visits by French President François Hollande and Tunisian President Moncef Marzourki, votes on Common Fisheries Policy reform plans and debates and resolutions on the European Semester and preparations for the 7-8 February EU summit. and with Members, starting at 14.00, will be webstreamed.
