This week at the European Parliament: 15th - 19th September 2014

MEPs meet in Strasbourg for a plenary sitting from Monday 15th - Thursday 18th September.

The plenary is when Members of the European Parliament from all political groups and from all countries meet in the parliamentary chamber in Strasbourg to discuss and vote on legislation. This the forum where, following committee meetings in the preceding weeks, MEPs take part in the decision-making and express their standpoint to the European Commission and Council of the European Union.

Highlights of the agenda

EU-Ukraine Association Agreement
After Council and Commission statements on developments in Ukraine and EU relations with Russia, MEPs will debate and vote on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, establishing a deep political association and free trade area. The agreement was signed by EU and Ukraine leaders on 27 June. (Debate and vote Tuesday)

Russian ban on imports of EU food products
Parliament will quiz agriculture commissioner Cioloş on what else the EU can do to help its farmers cope with the impact of the Russian import embargo on EU fruit and vegetables, dairy and meat products. EU farm produce exports to Russia were worth €11.9 billion in 2013. (Debate Monday)

European Youth Initiative
EU member states’ progress in implementing the €6 billion European Youth Initiative, launched in January 2014 to combat youth unemployment, will be debated with the Council and the Commission. MEPs will urge member states to move faster. (Wednesday)

European Globalisation Adjustment Fund aid
MEPs will vote on EU aid to help workers made redundant in various industries in Spain, The Netherlands, Romania and Greece to find new jobs. (Wednesday)

President's agenda
On Tuesday the President will meet Turkish Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkir and Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul Basile Casmoussa. On Friday he will pay an official visit to Paris, where he will meet French Prime Minister Manuel Valls.
