LIVE TV DEBATE - 15th May - Presidential candidates for the European Commission
Candidates for the presidency of the European Commission went head-to-head in a live TV debate just one week before the European elections.
David Cameron, together with the 27 other EU leaders will propose one of the European Parliament's candidates for President of the European Commission. The President will sit for the 2014-2019 term.

Five European political parties have so far nominated candidates. These five, representing widely differing political affiliations, will debate live on television with a "studio" audience in the European Parliament in Brussels.
Choose who's in charge in Europe
European citizens were encouraged to engage in the debate through social media (Twitter and Facebook), using the hashtag #TellEurope The choice of topics and the focus of the questions was influenced by this.

European political parties
When taking their seats in the European Parliament, the 73 UK MEPs from the UK political parties join those from comparable parties from other European countries. For example, the 13 British Labour Party MEPs are part of the Party of European Socialists, the British Liberal Democrats sit with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, etc.Find out more about European Political Parties
Format of the debate
During the 90-minute debate each candidate will give a short presentation and have one minute to reply to questions or comment on other candidates' replies.
