Seminar on 'The Value of Volunteering'

Event Start: 03/03/2011 - 2:00pm
Event End: 03/03/2011 - 4:30pm

Location : Europe House, Smith Square London

Volunteering leads to positive changes in people's lives: bringing communities together, increasing a person's sense of pride and belonging, in turn impacting positively on their health and well‐being. While it also makes a significant economic contribution, its social value can be even greater: where volunteering activities are present, there is a higher percentage of growth.  Such activities, replicated throughout the EU, have the capacity to generate social capital, innovative solutions and respond to newly‐emerging policy needs.

In the framework of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 (EYV 2011), it is now time for Member State Governments and EU institutions to take volunteering seriously and recognise it as a strategic response in economic and social terms, and as a driver of civic engagement.

This seminar will bring together key social actors (including volunteers) in England and at European level to examine the value of volunteering and identify priorities through which the Government and EU institutions can incorporate volunteer effort in their strategies.
