Legal highs: public protection versus public freedom? - London, 30 March 2015. Hosted by Dr Christian from "Embarrassing Bodies"
The EPIO was holding a public event on new EU proposals to enforce quicker bans on so-called legal highs from being sold to the public. The UK is the joint second highest consumer of legal highs in the EU, with 10% of 15-24 year olds having tried them at least once.
The new rules would cut from 2 years to 10 months the time needed to ban harmful psychoactive substances. In its first reading, the EP voted overwhelmingly by 504 votes to 36 to do so and a deal is now being thrashed out between it and national governments.
Michal BONI, the MEP steering the draft regulation through the European Parliament, led an expert panel at the event in London on March 30th.
Is this an area where tighter rules are needed or an infringement of personal liberty?.
