11-30-2018

 .

European Parliament will be meeting US Congress for the 83rd EU-US Inter-Parliamentary Meeting taking place from December 4th to December 6th, 2018 in Washington DC.

 .

Programme

Four working sessions have been agreed between the European Parliament and the US Congress:

(1) Recent political developments in the EU and the US;

(2) Trade and economic cooperation;

(3) Cooperation in foreign affairs and security policy, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia;

(4) Election interference.

The meetings are being hosted by the US House of Representatives, where Members will also attend a special session on the accountability of digital platforms with the House Energy Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection. In addition, the EP delegation will meet individual Senators, including Sen. Ron JOHNSON (R-WI), who chairs the Senate subcommittee on European and regional security cooperation.

MEPs will also have the opportunity to meet senior Administration officials, notably Mick MULVANEY, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, White House and officials from the Departments of State and Homeland Security, and the Office of the US Trade Representative.  They will also attend public diplomacy events at the US Institute for Peace and Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Objective

The aim of the dialogue is to maintain policy-oriented cooperation in those areas where the two Houses have responsibility as legislators, and to strengthen their parliamentary partnership in what are testing times for the transatlantic alliance.

The previous IPM within the framework of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue (TLD) took place in June 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria. This 83rd IPM/TLD will be the last one before the May 2019 European elections.

Participants

The EP mission is led by the Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the US, Christian EHLER (EPP, DE) and comprises 18 MEPs from all 8 political groups, including a Vice-President of Parliament, and the Chairs of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Constitutional Affairs committees.

The delegation on the US House of Representatives side is bipartisan and composed of Members sitting on a wide variety of committees. It is led by Mario DIAZ-BALART (R, FL).
