Interparliamentary Activities

Our Role and Tasks

Role and tasks of the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments:

·        Ensure and coordinate exchange of information, contacts and organisation of inter-parliamentary meetings between the European Parliament and the National Parliaments, Parliamentary Assemblies and organisations within the Directorate's remit (principally EU27, candidate countries and countries with a European vocation), and assist the President, the competent Vice Presidents and the Secretary General in these areas;

·        Co-ordinate and organise exchange of information and initiate meetings with civil servants in parliaments, assemblies and organisations for which the Directorate is responsible; 

·        Responsible for the European Centre for Parliamentary Research and Documentation (ECPRD). Tasks of Co-Director and Co-Secretary; 

·        Assist and support the European Parliament's committee secretariats in all matters relating to National Parliaments;

·        Act as a point of reference in the European Parliament for National Parliaments;

·        Assure the European Parliament's participation at the Conference of EU Speakers and the Meeting of Secretaries General;

·        Assure the European Parliament's participation at COSAC and maintain contacts with the COSAC secretariat and participate in its activities;

·        Co-ordinate contacts with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference;

·        Maintain regular contacts with the Representatives of National Parliaments in the European Parliament;

·        Co-ordinate and develop IT co-operation and general information channels with National Parliaments;

·        Carry out and co-ordinate comparative studies on political and administrative features within the Directorate's remit and organise interactive colloquia and information programmes for elected Members and civil servants of National Parliaments;

·        Maintain contacts with other services and EU institutions in all areas relating to parliaments, assemblies and organisations within the Directorate's remit;

·       Responsible for IPEX (Interparliamentary EU Information Exchange).  Tasks as Member of the Board of IPEX and Co-secretariat.
