Inter-parliamentary committee meeting "EU Consumer Law, its transposition and implementation"
The Internal market and consumer protection Committee of the European Parliament, chaired by Mrs Arlene McCarthy, held an inter-parliamentary committee meeting with national parliaments on the topic "EU consumer law, its transposition and implementation" on 2 April 2009 in Brussels.
This inter-parliamentary meeting focused on two issues. The first part of the meeting dealt with the current and future developments in EU Consumer Law. Mrs McCarthy gave an overview of the work-in-progress on the Internal market and consumer protection Committee on Consumer Rights Directive. Mrs Meglena Kuneva, Member of the European Commission, Responsible for Consumer Affairs, held an speech on current and future developments in the EU Consumer Law. The presentations were followed by a very informative debate between the members of the IMCO Committee and the members of national parliaments. The second part of the meeting focused on the transposition, implementation and enforcement of EU Consumer Law. Professor Geraint Howells, University of Manchester, School of Law, held an introductory presentation on the subject. The presentation was followed by a debate with the IMCO members and the members of national parliaments.
