Description
The Common European Asylum System in the inter-parliamentary spotlight
"Why and how detain asylum seekers? Which responsibility towards asylum seekers when the EU and its Member States act outside their territory? How to make the Common European Asylum System coherent? Can Member States trust each other's asylum system?" These are some of the questions which MEPs and national parlamentarians seeked to answer during a roundtable discussion, which was organised by the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in Brussels on 26 April.
According to the Stockholm Programme, the establishment of a common asylum procedure and a uniform status for those granted protection remains one of the objectives of the EU in the following years. This Programme, which was endorsed by the EU leaders in December 2009, sets out the EU priority actions for the next five years and beyond in the area of Freedom, Security and Justice.
