International Women's Day 2011: Role of Women in politics
A debate on the ways to enhance women's participation in politics was at the centre of this inter-parliamentary meeting with national Parliaments, which is co-organised by the Commitee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. It took place on 3 March 2011, five days ahead of the International Women's Day (8 March).
The debate was preceded by a welcome speech by EP President Jerzy Buzek, a key-note speech by Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as an intervention by Nicole Fontaine, former EP President.
International Women's Day was first declared in 1910 with the first event held in 1911. 2011 sees 100 years of International Women's Day having been celebrated around the world.
