The Rio+20 Conference was organised by the UN and took place from 20-22 June in Rio de Janeiro. 20 years after the first "Earth Summit", the conference had three objectives: Securing renewed political commitment to sustainable development, assessing the progress and implementation gaps in meeting already agreed commitments, and addressing new and emerging challenges. Rio+20 focused on two major themes: "The Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development", and "A Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication". This interparliamentary committee meeting gave members of national Parliaments and the European Parliament the opportunity to discuss these themes in detail.
