The European Parliament together with the Parliament of the country holding the Presidency-in-office of the Council of the European Union are organizing each semester a Joint Parliamentary Meeting on the Future of Europe.

The fourth Joint Parliamentary Meeting on the Future of Europe. The Lisbon Treaty - New Foundation for the EU's future, co-organized by the European Parliament and the Portuguese Assembleia da República took place on the 3 and 4 December 2007. The meeting was co-chaired by the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, and by the President of the Portuguese Parliament, Jaime Gama.
Members of National Parliaments and Members of the European Parliament gathered in Brussels to debate in plenary sessions as well as in three working groups around the following topics: Enhancing the role of Parliaments in the EU - Wider responsibilities for National Parliaments - Towards a new partnership with the European Parliament ; Ratification and implementation of the Lisbon Treaty - Making the European Union an efficient and responsive democracy ; The new institutional set-up. More efficiency and coherence.

Previous meetings

The first one took place in the European Parliament in Brussels the 8 and 9 May 2006. It was co-organized by the European Parliament and the Austrian Parliament. The Joint Parliamentary Meeting was co-chaired by Josep Borrell, President of the European Parliament, Andreas Khol, President of the Austrian Nationalrat and Sissy Roth-Halvax, President-in-office of the Austrian Bundesrat.

More than 200 parliamentarians from the European Parliament and the National Parliaments gathered in the hemicycle of the European Parliament to debate on the future of Europe. They discussed in four working groups dealing with four different topics: The European Union in the world and the borders of the EU; Globalization and the European economic and social model; Liberty, Security and Justice: what prospects?; and The future financial ressources of the Union.

The Austrian Chancellor and President-in-office of the European Council, Wolfgang Schüssel, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, delivered speeches and had a lifely debate with the parliamentarians.

The second Joint Parliamentary Meeting on the Future of Europe: from reflection to action took place on the 4 and 5 December 2006 under the co-presidency of the President of the Parliament of Finland, Paavo Lipponen, and the President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell.

The parliamentarians discussed largely about three main topics: The future financing of the Union; Towards a European Energy policy and The European Union's role in conflict prevention.

Both Matti Vanhanen, Prime Minister of Finland and President-in-office of the European Council and Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission took part in that Joint Parliamentary Meeting.

The third Joint Parliamentary Meeting on the Future of Europe: together...but how?, co-organized by the European Parliament and the German Bundestag took place on the 11 and 12 June 2007. This meeting has been co-chaired by the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, and by the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert. The guest speaker in the opening of the meeting has been Giuliano Amato, former Vice President of the Convention on the Future of Europe and Minister of Interior in the Italian Government.
