IMCO Members of the European Parliament are increasing scrutiny of major online marketplaces over the sale of unsafe or illegal products in the EU. As part of this work, the Parliament’s Internal Market Committee invited a representative from Temu to a discussion on 16 April 2026. The meeting followed earlier discussions with other platforms and reflects growing concern about product safety, consumer protection, and enforcement of EU rules online.
On 26 March 2026, Members of the European Parliament approved proposals to simplify artificial intelligence rules and propose clear application dates for high-risk system requirements and a ban on AI “nudifier” systems. The European Parliament adopted its position on a simplification (“omnibus”) proposal amending the Artificial Intelligence Act, by 569 votes in favour, 45 against, and with 23 abstentions.
On 25 March 2026, the European Parliament and the Council chose Lille, France, as the seat of the future EU Customs Authority. The decision followed a selection process, where both institutions shortlisted candidates from nine cities before agreeing on a final choice. The new authority, part of EU customs reform, will help improve coordination and oversight across Member States.
On 24 March 2026, the Internal Market committee lawmakers approved their opinion on the EU’s first space law, which aims to create a simpler and more predictable single market for space companies. The proposal addresses sensitive issues such as foreign operators, start-ups, and risk rules, while responding to the growing and fragmented space sector across Europe. The Industry committee (ITRE) will now build on IMCO’s opinion, negotiate ITRE amendments before voting in November 2026.
In light of criticism of the Digital Services Act (DSA) by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in a recent report, IMCO has invited U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin to participate in a discussion on EU digital laws on 24 March 2026. He has also published a paper responding to the preceding report and its claims. This debate followed a previous IMCO discussion with former Commissioner Thierry Breton (see below), who was sanctioned for his work on the DSA.
