Højdepunkter
On 15 April 2026, Members of the European Parliament’s environment and internal market committees approved the proposed updates to EU rules on chemicals. The plan seeks to simplify parts of existing legislation on chemicals, cosmetics and fertilisers. It aims to lower administrative costs, especially for small businesses, while keeping strong protections for people and the environment. The updated rules have been approved through three compromise amendments covering the entire proposal.
On 16 April 2026, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) Committee is set to hold a single vote covering both the Union Customs Code reform and the choice of the seat of the future EU Customs Authority. The vote concerns a provisional agreement between the European Parliament and EU governments. This agreement, reached in March 2026, confirms Lille, France, as the future home of the EU Customs Authority. This decision followed a review of nine candidate cities.
IMCO Members of the European Parliament are increasing scrutiny of major online marketplaces over the sale of unsafe or illegal products in the EU. As part of this work, the Parliament’s Internal Market Committee invited a representative from Temu to a discussion on 16 April 2026. The meeting followed earlier discussions with other platforms and reflects growing concern about product safety, consumer protection, and enforcement of EU rules online.
On 26 March 2026, Members of the European Parliament approved proposals to simplify artificial intelligence rules and propose clear application dates for high-risk system requirements and a ban on AI “nudifier” systems. The European Parliament adopted its position on a simplification (“omnibus”) proposal amending the Artificial Intelligence Act, by 569 votes in favour, 45 against, and with 23 abstentions.
On 25 February, Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) held an exchange of views with former European Commissioner Thierry Breton. The discussion addressed the recent visa sanctions imposed by the United States on Breton, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, Josephine Ballon and Clare Melford, as well as the broader implications for Europe’s digital rulebook and digital sovereignty.
On 24 March 2026, the Internal Market committee lawmakers approved their opinion on the EU’s first space law, which aims to create a simpler and more predictable single market for space companies. The proposal addresses sensitive issues such as foreign operators, start-ups, and risk rules, while responding to the growing and fragmented space sector across Europe. The Industry committee (ITRE) will now build on IMCO’s opinion, negotiate ITRE amendments before voting in November 2026.
In light of criticism of the Digital Services Act (DSA) by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in a recent report, IMCO has invited U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin to participate in a discussion on EU digital laws on 24 March 2026. He has also published a paper responding to the preceding report and its claims. This debate followed a previous IMCO discussion with former Commissioner Thierry Breton (see below), who was sanctioned for his work on the DSA.
