In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The next ITRE Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday 2 February 2022, 9.00 - 12.00, 14.00 - 16.00 and 16.45 - 18.45, and on Thursday 3 February 2022, 9.00 - 12.00.

On 27 January, the ITRE committee will have an exchange of views with Ms Barbara Pompili, Minister for the Ecological Transition (energy), Ms Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister Delegate for Industry (industry, SMEs, space), Ms Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (research, innovation) and Mr Cédric O, Minister of State for the Digital Transition and Electronic Communication (telecommunications, ICT).

The constitutive meeting of the ITRE Committee took place in Brussels on 26 January, following the appointment of the Committee members during the plenary sitting of 17-20 January. During this meeting, ITRE elected its Bureau, made up of the Chair and four Vice-Chairs, for the next two and a half years. The Committee then immediately resumed its work.

This study provides an analysis of the gaps in EU policies aimed at increasing industrial energy efficiency, an assessment of the ability of the electricity grid to absorb large increases in renewables, and an evaluation of the energy efficiency potential of the Renovation Wave. Links to the proposed Fit for 55 package are also made for all three topics.

This study provides an analysis of the European space market. The market size and structure of the European space industry is considered, alongside the dynamics of the new space economy. The contribution of the EU space programmes to fostering the uptake of space data, and the challenges and drivers of maximising synergies between the EU upstream and downstream space sectors are examined. The new Space-based Connectivity Initiative is also considered.
