On 18 April 2023, Parliament voted in favour of the provisional political agreement reached with the Council on a new Machinery Regulation, which will replace the current Machinery Directive, adapting the rules to new market developments and risks originating from emerging technologies.

IMCO rapporteur, Mr Ivan Štefanec (EPP) said at the end of negotiations: Today, after 18 months of work, we have found an agreement on the revision of the Machinery Directive, that will bring more safety for its users and predictability by harmonisation of EU markets for the machinery industry, especially SMEs.

The agreement implies that six categories of machinery will be included in Annex I, thereby subject to third party conformity assessment, supported by strong procedures for updating the Annex with additional categories. The new Regulation will apply from 42 months after entry force, thus giving companies time to adjust to the new requirements.
