In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities.

Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The last DEVE meeting took place on 13 January 2022 to debate on:
  • The EU Global Gateway
  • Access to vaccines in developing countries
The next meeting will be organised on 26 January 2022.

Street demonstrations, investigations, poisoning and jail… Alexei Navalny’s fight against the corruption of the Russian regime has been met with intimidation and violence for more than a decade. The European Parliament awarded the 2021 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the jailed Russian opposition figure in the centenary year of Russian dissident Andrei Sakharov, after whom the prize is named.

On 13 December, the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Development and the Subcommittee on Human Rights held a joint exchange of views with the representatives of the 2021 Sakharov Prize laureate Alexei Navalny - his daughter Daria Navalnaya and his adviser Leonid Volkov. The Sakharov Prize award ceremony took place in the Plenary on Wednesday, 15 December.
