The eCommerce Directive has played an important role in the digital economy and online information environment. Now it is being applied in a completely changed context. This study addresses automated filtering of online content. It introduces automated filtering of user-generated materials and presents the filtering technologies deployed to different types of media. It also discusses the main critical issues under the present legal framework and proposals for a future Digital Services Act.
