The next meeting of the Committee on Culture and Education will take place on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 April 2023
Highlights

The Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) had a first exchange of views on the proposal for a Regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market (“European Media Freedom Act”) on 28 March. The Rapporteur, Ms Verheyen (EPP Group) outlined briefly the main objectives of the upcoming EP draft report and inform CULT Members about the work being carried out and the next steps and timeline.

On 27 March, there was an exchange of views between the Committee on Culture and Education and Commissioner Ferreira. They discussed the Commission’s communication on harnessing talent in Europe’s regions and the ‘Talent Booster Mechanism'. As part of the European Year of Skills, the EU wants to support regions affected by an accelerated decline of their working age population to develop training, retaining and attraction measures.

The Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) voted on the implementation report on the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive on 28 March (Rapporteur: Ms Kammerevert, S&D Group). Following the vote in Committee, the report is foreseen to be adopted by the Plenary in April/May 2023.

The Committee on Culture and Education discussed on 27 March two recent publications of the European Parliament's STOA Panel. The first deals with 'The State of Play of Academic Freedom in the EU' - a pilot country report on major issues in EU Member States. The second, 'How academic freedom is monitored?' is an overview of existing methods to assess academic freedom.

On 1st March 2023, the Policy Department for Structural and Cohesion Policies held a workshop on "The influence of social media on the development of children and young people" at the CULT Committee meeting.
