Members discussed a proposal to mobilize the European Union Solidarity Fund to provide support to Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Greece and France in the wake of a series of major floods which took place in 2023. The rapporteur for the file is Georgios Aftias (EPP, Greece).

The proposed decision would unlock nearly € 1 030 million for the Member States. The EU Solidarity Fund was set up to provide support in the event of natural disasters and, in 2020, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, its scope was broadened to include public health emergencies under the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative.

The BUDG Committee is scheduled to vote on the report on 23 September.
