Missions

A committee can decide to organise missions to a member state, a country outside of the EU or to international conferences. Missions are undertaken in the exercise of the powers conferred on the committee and are composed of a limited numbers of members of the committee. Committees may also send, for no more than three days, a three-member delegation to agencies for which they are principally responsible. A delegation of 9 Members of the European Parliament, from the Committee on Development and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, will take part in the ministerial segment of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, 13-15 July 2022 in New York, USA.

A group of 12 MEPs from the Committees on Fisheries, Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and Development are part of the EU delegation to the UN Ocean Conference taking place in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July.

Flag of Moldova

From 15 to 17 June a delegation of the Committee on Development travelled to Moldova to examine the situation of Ukrainian refugees arriving and staying in Moldova and the humanitarian response funded by the EU and implemented by UN agencies and NGOs.

Abbreviation WTO

A delegation of 8 Members of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) travelled to Geneva from 12 to 15 June for the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). They held a series of bilateral meetings with ministers, pressing them to reach an agreement on issues such as unsustainable fisheries subsidies, agriculture, e-commerce and a possible waiver of intellectual property (IP) rights on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

Members from the Special Committee on Foreign Interference went to Riga on 24 May to meet officials from the NATO Strategic Communication Centre, ahead of the Riga StratCom Dialogue, which took place on 25 and 26 May. The event gathered the strategic communications community in the aftermath of Russian aggression.

Albania and Montenegro

The AFET delegation visited Albania and Montenegro from 23 to 26 May 2022. The main purpose of the mission was to reconfirm Albania’s readiness to start EU accession negotiations and to express support and encouragement for Montenegro’s efforts to conclude them.

The Committee on Petitions organised a Fact-Finding visit to the Hauts de France region to acquire first hand knowledge of the challenging security and safety situation of truck drivers, who have become victims of organised crime engaged in cargo theft and human trafficking, often combined with violence towards drivers who are also at risk of fuel theft, armed robberies and intrusions.

FISC Subcommittee

Members of the FISC Subcommittee will travel to Washington D.C. from 23 to 25 May 2022. The delegation, led by the Chair, Mr. Paul Tang, will meet with representatives of key institutions, such as the Senate’s Finance Committee, the US Department of Treasury, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, as well as stakeholders from the private sector and civil society.

An ad hoc delegation of eight Members traveled to Santiago de Chile from 23 to 25 May 2022 to discuss the progress of the modernisation of the trade part of the existing 2002 EU-Chile Association Agreement and other bilateral trade matters.

A delegation of the Committee on Development travelled to Madagascar from 23 to 25 May 2022. The overall aims of the mission were for Members to inspect the response to the current famine in the southern Grand Sud region and to assess more generally the use of humanitarian and development assistance in the country for building resilience to food crises induced by climate change and droughts.

A Fact-finding visit to Palma de Mallorca, Baleares (Spain) took place on 11 to 13 April concerning several petitions on alleged mistreatment of minors under foster care in Mallorca. On their first day, the delegation of the Committee on Petitions met the petitioners, families of the victims, journalists and political representatives at the regional level.

Tunisia

The AFET delegation visited Tunis from 10 to 14 April 2022. The main purpose of the mission was to reassess the path of Tunisia following more than a decade of democratic transition, during which democratic institutions have been established and tested. The recent increasing concentration of powers in the hands of the President since summer 2021 represents a cause for concern and justified an official visit.
