Exchange of views on the migrant shipwreck off to the Italian coasts

Thousands of migrants attempt crossing the Mediterranean every year, and some of them are saved from drowning by the Frontex operation. But that is not its mission.

On 23 May 2023, LIBE Members heard from representatives of the NGO Medecins sans Frontières, Frontex, and from the Italian Guardia Costiera and Guardia di Finanza.

The debate focused on the role played by Frontex and Italian authorities in rescuing human lives at sea, and in connection with the incident from last February, when children and women, died after a wooden boat carrying migrants from Turkey broke apart on rocks off the coast of Calabria (Southern Italy).
