Exchange of views on UNEA-5 and plastic pollution with UNEP and the Commission

On Tuesday, 14 June 2022, ENVI Committee held an exchange of views with Ms Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Commission on the outcome of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) and on the preparations for a global treaty tackling plastic pollution.
On 2 March 2022, UN Member States endorsed a resolution to End Plastic Pollution that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, including its production, design and disposal, and has been called the most important international multilateral environmental deal since the Paris climate accord. The resolution establishes an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee starting its work in 2022, with the ambition of completing a draft global legally binding agreement by the end of 2024.
