Highlights
On 18 February, from 14:30 to 16:30, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) is going to host a public hearing entitled 'Housing Rentals in the Internal Market and Protection of Consumers'. This event aims to bring together different perspectives and gather feedback on housing rental challenges, with a particular emphasis on consumer protection.
The IMCO meeting of January 27 will feature an exchange of views with the Commission and three external speakers representing stakeholders. This discussion will contribute the committee's work on its own-initiative strategic report on public procurement. The report aims to identify the weaknesses of the current public procurement framework and explore how it can be revised to enable public procurement to effectively address the challenges facing the EU. On January 28, the IMCO Committee will discuss the proposed changes to the Package Travel Directive. The aim is to clarify the rules, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic affected the travel industry and travelers. Committee members will share their thoughts and ask questions to the Commission's representatives. A draft report on the proposal is expected to be presented to the committee on March 17-18. On 28 January, Members will hold an exchange of views with the Commission on the Social media compliance with Digital Services Act (DSA). The discussion is expected to focus mostly on social media platforms' involvement in electoral processes. More specifically, there is interest to know more about their compliance with risk mitigation, content moderation, and political advertisement obligations under EU rules.
On February 17, IMCO is going to hold a public hearing on the safety of products in the single market, focusing on e-commerce and imports from non-EU countries. The goal of this hearing is to gather input from the Commission, businesses, consumer groups, and national authorities.
The Polish Presidency of the Council will present its program at the next IMCO meeting on January 28. The Presidency's priorities include defense and security, resistance to foreign interference and disinformation and ensuring security and freedom of business. The Polish Presidency aims to deepen the Single Market and remove barriers to cross-border activity. It is expected to propose concrete actions to achieve this goal.
