In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions. The meetings allow for remote participation in a virtual environment.

Following these decisions, the next ITRE Committee meeting will take place on Thursday 28 October 2021, 9.00-12.00, 13.45-15.45 and 16.45-18.45, room SPAAK 1A2 and remote meeting.

On 14 October 2021, Ms Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director-General in DG ENER, presented the Commission proposals and impact assessments for the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive. The two proposals were adopted by the Commission on 14 July as part of the Fit for 55 package. ITRE is the lead Committee for those proposals.

Electricity prices are reaching record levels across Europe, burdening industries and consumers with higher energy bills. The European Commission is considering establishing a structured toolbox for Member States to mitigate the situation. To discuss the matter, the ITRE Committee invited the EU Energy Commissioner, Ms Kadri Simson for 14 October 2021.

On 14 October 2021, the ITRE Committee had an exchange of views with Mr Massimo Garribba, Deputy Director-General in DG ENER, on the future of the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community. ITRE is the Committee responsible for nuclear energy and the Euratom Treaty.

On 27 September the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy voted on its report and the decision to enter interinstitutional negotiations on the proposed revision of the 2013 regulation on trans-European networks in energy (TEN-E). It also voted on amendments and compromise amendments on the Roaming Regulation review.
