The common fisheries policy (CFP) is one of the EU’s most integrated policies. Its aim is to make sure that fisheries are managed sustainably. The conservation of fish stocks and marine environments has to go hand in hand with ensuring a social and economic balance for coastal communities. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture are vital for the EU’s food security. So that is what we focus on in the Committee on Fisheries, which I have the honour of chairing. The Fisheries Control Regulation, the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and Brexit will be our priorities during the first part of this parliamentary term.

In 2021, the committee will publish an analysis of the CFP to establish what is working well, and which areas require more work. In carrying out this investigative task, the Committee on Fisheries will also be checking the implementation of certain laws and consulting stakeholders on the ground. The question we need to be asking is whether the CFP currently has the tools it needs to tackle the climate and biodiversity challenges it is facing, both now and in the future.

We need a CFP that can live up to the ambitions set out in the Green Deal - and we're working on it!
