On Thursday, 12 December 2024, the FEMM Committee will hold a hearing on “Securing Gender Equality and Women’s Rights in the Digital Sphere”.

The hearing will be split into two different panels: "Addressing the risks to gender equality and women's rights online" will reflect on the growing dangers women face in the digital space, driven by the spread of harmful technologies, disinformation and new forms of online abuse. The second panel, "Measures and challenges for securing, strengthening and advancing the rights for women and gender equality in the digital sphere" will explore the responsibility of social media platforms on protecting women from online abuse and harassment. This panel will be looking into the tools already available at an EU level, as well as further proposals on measures that can be implemented. Additionally, this hearing will also examine the underrepresentation of women in the digital sector and AI innovation, and the role it could play in the proper fight against the online threats.

The hearing is part of the 2024 European Gender Equality Week in the European Parliament.
