During a LIBE debate on 23 September, the Commission unveiled AgoraEU, a revamped funding programme under the new MFF, designed to bolster EU values and democratic participation.
Commission representatives explained that the initiative would be built around three thematic strands, Creative Europe-Culture, Media+ and CERV+. The programme aims to provide stable, long-term support to civil society, strengthen democratic participation, and respond to issues such as disinformation and manipulation. A headline change is financial: the budget will double compared with the current programmes. The increase is meant to keep successful projects running while meeting rising demand and tackling new challenges.
Members pressed the Commission for details. They notably asked how AgoraEU will ensure that recipients of EU money respect fundamental rights and how it plans to fight online manipulation and fake news. Questions also focused on the role of national authorities in managing the funds and on safeguards to guarantee transparency and accountability.
AgoraEU is part of the next EU budget cycle and LIBE will be closely involved in the legislative process.
