On Tuesday, April 25, the LIBE and FEMM Committees took a landmark vote on the consent for the EU accession to EU accession to the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence - 'Istanbul Convention'

The vote in the joint LIBE-FEMM committee meeting came after more than 11 years of work and support by the European Parliament for EU accession to this important international instrument on preventing and combating violence against women and girls. In the EU, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15 with more than half of all women having been sexually harassed. Accession by the EU to this convention will strengthen the work done in the European Union in this area, including the ongoing progress on finalizing the Proposal for a Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence.
