Taxation and fight against Money Laundering

On 7 June 2018, Committee Members will participate in a workshop on "Taxation and fight against Money Laundering: Crypto Currencies, Digitalisation and the European Semester" organised by the Policy Department A. This workshop will consist in three panels:

Panel 1:
Professor R. Houben will present the legal context of virtual currencies and blockchain and mapped the implications for financial crime, money laundering and tax evasion, including against the backdrop of the existing EU legislation.

Panel 2:
Ms E.Hadzhieva will present updates to the TAX2 study on digital taxation with BEPS progress and recent developments in major jurisdictions with regards to the change in relation to digital, direct and indirect taxation. Professor J.Vella will present potential benefits, the challenges and risks of potential tax disruptions of these international developments and measures.

Panel 3:
Presentation of how the fight against taxpayers' aggressive tax planning (ATP) strategies is essential to secure tax revenues and safeguard public finances. ATP practices have a spill-over effects in other territories. The European Semester allows to address national tax practices that encourage them.
