The Committee on Budgets adopted an opinion for the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) committee on the proposal for a Directive on asset recovery and confiscation. In the wake of the addition of circumvention of EU restrictive measures to the list of EU crimes, the Commission proposed modernising EU asset recovery rules. These rules will apply to the violation of restrictive measures, ensuring the effective tracing, freezing, management and confiscation of the proceeds.

The Committee on Budgets received high-level speakers to discuss in a hearing the EU budget and its impact on EU external action and its crisis response capacity. The hearing was held in view of the upcoming review of the EU’s long-term budget (multiannual financial framework 2021-2027).

Given the need to support in a timely and targeted manner the Member States for reinforcing their defence capacities, the European Commission proposed to incentivise common procurement via the EU budget through a dedicated Short Term Instrument establishing the European Defence industry Reinforcement through Common Procurement Act (EDIRPA).

The Committee on Budgets adopted the general rapporteur for the 2024 budget, Mr Janusz Lewandowski's, guidelines for next year's budget.

The Committee on Budgets debated a draft opinion for the International Trade (INTA) committee on the Commission’s proposal for a decision as regards the amount of financial support (Macro-Financial Assistance) to the Republic of Moldova.

The Committee on Budgets debated the draft report on the European Commission's proposal for a decision to mobilise the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF) to support 303 displaced workers made redundant following the liquidation of the Spanish company Alu Ibérica.

On Monday 6 March 2023, 17:00 – 18:30, BUDG and ECON Members held an exchange of views on the implementation of InvestEU with Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for the Budget and Administration, Paolo Gentiloni, Commissioner for the Economy, and Teresa Czerwińska, Vice President of the European Investment Bank.

In the context of EU economic, social and budgetary policies, the European Parliament and the Swedish Presidency organised the European Parliamentary Week 2023. It took place on 27 - 28 February 2023 in the European Parliament in Brussels.The Inter-Committee Meeting organised by the Committee on Budgets took place on Monday 27 February from 15.30 until 18.45.

The Committee on Budgets was in Chişinău, Moldova from 21 to 23 February 2023. The main objective of this mission was to assess Moldova's most pressing needs in terms of EU financial support, also in view of the country's candidate status.
