Next CULT Committee meeting: 6 February 2023

The next meeting of the Committee on Culture and Education will take place on Monday 6 February 2023 from 15:00 to 18:30 in meeting room SPINELLI 3G-3.

The CULT Committee in association with LIBE and IMCO committees, organises on 6 February at 16.30 a public hearing dedicated to the "Media Freedom Act", a long awaited legislative proposal aiming to strengthen media pluralism and media freedom in the European Union.

On 6 February Lotta Edholm, Minister for Schools, Parisa Liljestrand, Minister for Culture and Jakob Forssmed, Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health, will present the priorities of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the area of Culture and Education in the CULT Committee.

The Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) had a first discussion on the proposal for a Regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market (“European Media Freedom Act”) and amending the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD, Directive 2010/13/EU) on 23 January. The Commission outlined briefly the main objectives of the proposal and CULT Members had the opportunity to ask questions and to debate on media policy issues.

On 23 January, CULT Members exchanged views on the budgetary state of affairs concerning the Erasmus+, Creative Europe, European Solidary Corps and the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programmes. Commission representatives from DGs EAC, CNECT and JUST as well as the EACEA agency presented the budgetary implementation of the programmes so far and with an outlook until the end of the current multiannual financial period (MFF) 2021-2027.

On Tuesday 24 January the CULT Committee had a presentation of a study on The European Universities Initiative: first lessons, main challenges and perspectives. The study presented by Prof. dr. Barend van der Meulen from CHEPS (Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies).
