Next meeting of the Budgetary Control Committee (CONT)

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

The meetings will be with remote participation for Members (being able to view and listen to proceedings, ask for the floor and intervene in the meeting). Other participants are invited to follow the meeting through web-streaming.

Following these decisions, the next CONT committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, 26 May and Thursday, 27 May 2021.

On 15.04.2021, the CONT Committee held a public hearing on the early-detection and exclusion system (EDES) is a mechanism set up in 2016 by the European Commission. Its purpose is to reinforce the protection of the Union's financial interests and to ensure sound financial management. Since the revision of 2018, the Financial Regulation contains detailed provisions on the functioning of EDES (Articles 135 to 145). Click below for more information.

On 14.04.2021 CONT Members voted on the EU Anti-Fraud Programme (adoption of draft recommendation for second reading) and on the CONT opinion on the Implementation report on the EU Trust Funds and the Facility for Refugees in Turkey.

On 22 and 23 March 2021 the CONT Members voted on the adoption of the draft reports concerning the 2019 Discharge to the Commission, EDF, Agencies and Joint Undertakings. On 1 March, the CONT adopted the draft reports concerning the European Parliament and the Other Institutions. In total 2456 amendments were tabled to 52 draft reports and 46 opinions were given by other Committees. The vote in Plenary will take place on 26-29 April 2021, thus closing the 2019 discharge cycle.

On 23.03.2021, the CONT Committee held an exchange of views with Sandra Gallina, Director-General of DG SANTE, in the context of the EU Vaccine Strategy, the Commission has concluded eight advanced purchase agreements (APA) of coronavirus vaccines with the relevant pharmaceutical companies. This effort to tackle the pandemic with tangible actions in the area of EU public health policy recalls the important role of the Committee on Budgetary Control.
