In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the President of the European Parliament has established a number of measures to contain the spread of the virus and to safeguard Parliament's core activities. The current precautionary measures do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are maintained to ensure the smooth running of the institution's legislative, budgetary, and scrutiny functions.

The last DEVE Meeting took place on 16 May 2022 to debate on the current situation and EU assistance to Afghanistan, with Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, and Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships.
The next DEVE meeting will take place on 14 June.

A delegation of the Committee on Development will travel to Madagascar from 23 to 25 May 2022. The overall aims of the mission are for Members to inspect the response to the current famine in the southern Grand Sud region and to assess more generally the use of humanitarian and development assistance in the country, as well as to follow up on Parliament’s resolution on child labour in mica mining adopted on 12 February 2020.

Environmental crimes have become a wide spread phenomenon worldwide and are widely recognised as one of the most profitable forms of transnational criminal activity. Bringing together a wide range of international experts and policy-makers, the workshop, to be held on 19 May, 14.00-16.30, will seek to identify existing gaps in policy and legal responses, and generate debates about how the identified gaps can be filled.

The Committees on Development and on Budgets held a public hearing on the "Implementation and Financing of COVAX: Successes, Challenges and Lessons for the Future" on 17 May. The hearing focused on the current state of play, mechanisms in place and the current and possible future financial needs of the COVAX initiative. It sought to understand how EU financing has supported vaccine research, production and distribution efforts.
