Upcoming committee meeting

On 26 September 2022, Members of the Committee on Development (DEVE) met to discuss:


  • Together with the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Subcommittee on Human Rights, the presentation of the candidates for the 2022 Sakharov Prize (15.00-16.30)
  • Together with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, an exchange of views on the situation in Ethiopia (16.30-1730)
  • Together with the European Commission, an exchange of views on the humanitarian situation in Pakistan following the monsoon floods (17.30-18.30)


On a draft opinion by rapporteur Antoni COMÍN I OLIVERES MEP (NI, ES) on the general budget of the European Union for the financial year 2023 (17.30)

The next DEVE meeting will take place on 13 October.

On 29 September, the Policy Department of the Directorate-General for External Policies is organising for the Committee on Development a workshop on "Enhancing Policy Coherence for Development". The workshop will be chaired by MEP Janina Ochojska.

Each year, the Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to honour exceptional individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. In 2021, the prize was awarded to Alexei Navalny, Russian activist and political prisoner. The nominees for this year’s edition were presented by the political groups in a joint meeting of the Committees on Development and Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights in Brussels on 26 September.

Torrential rains during the recent monsoon season have led to the worst floods in Pakistan’s history, with approximately one-third of Pakistan covered by water, and severe damage to the country's infrastructure and agricultural land and livestock. On 26 September, the Committee on Development debated with the European Commission on the humanitarian situation in this country and the EU response to this disaster.

A delegation from the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) and the Committee on Development (DEVE) traveled to Ethiopia on 20-22 September 2022 to look at the situation of women in Ethiopia in particular gender-based violence both in view of persistent harmful traditional practices and of the armed conflict. The implementation of the Regional UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation was also assessed.

A delegation from the Committee on Development, chaired by Stéphane Bijoux, traveled to Indonesia from 20 to 22 September 2022 to review the EU development portfolio in the country, in the context of the new programming period (2021-2027).

On 30 August, Members of the Development Committee will debate with the European Commission and development partners on how to avert the devastating hunger crisis in East Africa as well as in the Sahel region. The discussion will also focus on long-term solutions to enhance food security in light of the consequences of the war in Ukraine, Covid-19, conflict, poverty and inflation.
