NEXT DROI MEETINGS - 27 and 28 January 2021

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions together with urgent matters in the field of human rights and democracy, are continued.

Following these decisions, the next meetings of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Wednesday 27 January 2021 from 13.45 - 15.45 and on Thursday 28 January 2021, from 9.00 - 12.00 and 13.45 - 15.45 via videoconference.


After 26 years under an authoritarian president, the people of Belarus are calling for democracy and freedom. Peaceful weekly demonstrations since the election have been met with brutal repression. The European Parliament awards the 2020 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the democratic opposition of Belarus.

On 14 December, a joint AFET/DEVE/DROI meeting saw the participation of the 2020 Sakharov Prize laureate: the democratic opposition in Belarus, represented by the Coordination Council, an initiative uniting prominent Belarusian political and civil society figures. MEPs from the three committees had the opportunity to exchange views with, in particular, Ms Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Ms Veranika Tsapkala, Ms Volha Kavalkova, Mr Ales Bialiatski and Ms Tatiana Khomich, sister of Maryia Kalesnikava.
