On 10 May 2021, the ENVI Committee organised a public hearing entitled ‘New GM techniques in the food sector: impacts on health and the environment?’

The aim of the hearing was to assess and to discuss with the help of four experts potential impacts of new genetic modification techniques on health and the environment. At the opening of the event, Commission officials presented a report on 'novel genomic techniques' that was drafted following a 2018 CJEU ruling. The latter concluded that genome edited products and other new GMOs fall within the scope of EU GMO legislation while indicating that new policy instruments should be considered to make the legislation more resilient, future-proof and uniformly applied.
