CONT mission to Slovakia

Sobrance, Košice, Bratislava - Slovakia

On 17-18 December 2018 a fact-finding mission of the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) took place in relation to the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. The fact-finding mission will presented the report to the Plenary for the key debate on Slovakia on 29 January 2019.

On 21.11.2018, there will be a joint committee meeting with PETI-JURI-CONT to hold an exchange of views with the European Ombudsman on her recommendation in joint cases 488/2018/KR and 514/2018/KR on the European Commission's appointment of a new Secretary-General. The meeting is organised in a PETI committee slot.

CONT mission to Romania

The Committee will visit Romania from 17 to 19 September in order to verify on the spot the situation in the country. Meetings with the ministers responsible for EU funds, parliamentary committees dealing with fraud and corruption and the national audit chamber are foreseen. The delegation will also visit some projects outside the capital. The EMPL Committee will visit Romania as well on the same days; therefore, some of the elements of the programme are organised jointly by both Committees.

CONT Mission to Albania

The Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) decided to send a fact-finding mission to Albania from 7 to 9 May 2018. The mission focused on implementation of EU funds for Albania, in the light of the recent opening of the accession negotiations for this candidate country, as well as visiting difficult projects and holding meetings with Albanian government ministers, members of the national parliament and Albanian Supreme State Audit.

On this visit the delegation principally noted:

- the very serious approach of the current authorities on tackling corruption in full cooperation with the EU and the Member States, especially Italy and its Guardia di Finanza;

- the EU funds spent in Albania are used well and efficiently and that the level of irregularities and fraud is not at an abnormal level; and

- that involvement of the European Union in Western Balkans is a game-changer, as it has significantly improved regional interstate relations, despite historical mistrust; providing hope for peace and stability in the region.

CONT mission to Latvia and Lithuania

The Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) decided to send a fact-finding mission to Latvia and Lithuania from 3 to 5 April 2018. The objective of the mission was twofold: to verify the use of structural fund assistance to, primarily, Latvia and to verify the progress made in decommissioning the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The latter also constitutes a follow-up to the CONT mission in 2012.

The CONT Delegation visited a variety of structural fund projects in Latvia and Lithuania and was, in general, satisfied with the implementation. The CONT Delegation paid particular attention to the use of financial instruments.

CONT-LIBE ad-hoc mission to Slovakia

On 7-9 March 2018 a joint fact-finding mission of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) took place in relation to the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. The fact-finding mission will present the report to the Plenary for the key debate on Slovakia on 14 March 2018.

CONT mission to Greece

On 13-15 February, Budgetary Control Committee MEPs visited various projects in Greece, among which the E65 highway and Tithorea-Lianokladi-Domokos railway, the rehabilitation of the castle of Mytilene, the wastewater treatment on Lesvos and the refugee camps in Mytilene.

CONT mission to EUROPOL

The Hague, Netherlands

On 19-20 September, Budgetary Control Committee MEPs visited EUROPOL in the Hague. The delegation focused on governance and compliance at Europol, its administrative and financial management, as well as on its operational activities in the area of migrant smuggling, counter-terrorism and cyber-crime.

CONT mission to Hungary

On 18-20 September, Budgetary Control Committee MEPs went to Hungary to visit a number of project sites and meet members of the Hungarian Parliament, the State Audit Office and civil society representatives. The Budgetary Control Committee regularly inspects EU-funded projects in the member states and other countries.

CONT mission to Croatia and Serbia

Croatia and Serbia

On 17-20 July, a delegation of six Members attended the CONT mission to Croatia and Serbia. The mission of the Committee on Budgetary Control was to assure the citizens of the European Union that EU funds are raised and spent effectively and properly and that they are correctly allocated to the tasks which the Union has been asked to perform.
