Hearing on the EU-Africa Strategy
On 28 November 2023, the Committee on Development held a public hearing on the EU-Africa Strategy. Members discussed how it delivered against the background of geopolitical tensions and changes that development cooperation has undergone recently. Moderators: Mr Carlos Zorrinho and Mr Karsten Lucke
The EU-Africa partnership is facing challenges in the current context of shifting coalitions, global uncertainty and increasing rivalry. The DEVE committee will hold a public hearing on 28 November to discuss how to enhance cooperation between the two continents and build trust through concrete, mutually beneficial cooperation.
The recovery from COVID-19, economic blows and increasing food prices, the divergences in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the war in Gaza are affecting the EU-Africa partnership. In this context, DEVE members want to contribute recommendations on how to make "the partnership of equals" between Europe and Africa a tangible reality.
Members discussed with experts and practitioners how the 2020 EU-Africa Strategy delivered, as well as the Global Gateway initiative. The hearing zoomed in on some of the critical areas of EU-Africa cooperation: climate partnerships, energy transition, and food security.
