The Committee on Employment and Social Affairs voted on the adoption of the draft report on the European Year of Skills 2023 on 6 February 2023. The Committee is committed to ensuring the future generation of workers the skills and support they need throughout their professional development.

For the European Parliament, the European Year of Skills should symbolically start on 9 May 2023 ('Europe day') and end on 8 May 2024. Investing in upskilling and reskilling of the EU workforce to provide companies, especially SMEs, the skills they need to grow will be crucial to boost the competitiveness of the EU economy. Skilled workers will also enjoy better job opportunities and fully engage in society, which is the key to a fair and just twin transition. Attracting talented workers from third countries, while granting them access to adequate working conditions and social protection, will further contribute to addressing current skills shortages. Providing targeted support to young people, especially those living in remote areas through a better use of EU funds, such as the Erasmus+, are among EMPL's priorities, together with promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the development of digital skills.
