On 24 December 2020, the Commission and the UK government agreed the terms of future cooperation between the EU and the UK. The agreement covers not just trade in goods and services, but also areas such as environment, climate, food safety, animal and plant health standards, chemicals and health cooperation. It seeks to guarantee non-regression from the current levels of climate and environmental protection.

ENVI discussed the issues with the Commission's UK Task Force in preparation for providing an opinion in the form of a letter which will be voted on 27 January. The agreement requires Parliament's consent ahead of the end-of- February deadline, which is when its provisional application is due to lapse.
