On Wednesday, 25 January 2023, the FEMM and LIBE Committees jointly voted on the draft interim report on the “EU accession to the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence” (Istanbul Convention).

The interim report was prepared by co-rapporteurs Arba Kokalari (FEMM) and Łukasz Kohut (LIBE). The Istanbul Convention is the most far-reaching international instrument to comprehensively address violence against women and domestic violence. The ratification of the Istanbul Convention by the EU, and the inclusion of several forms of gender-based violence to the list of EU crimes defined in the Treaty, are more than ever needed to strengthen the EU response to gender-based violence and ensure the same level of protection throughout the Union for victims, both online and offline. This report is an important signal of the European Parliament, asking the Council to move forward with the EU ratification.
