Kumitat jista’ jorganizza seduta ta’ smigħ ma’ esperti fejn dan jitqies essenzjali għall-ħidma tiegħu fuq suġġett partikolari. Is-seduti ta’ smigħ jistgħu jsiru wkoll b’mod konġunt minn żewġ kumitati jew aktar. Il-parti l-kbira tal-kumitati jorganizzaw seduti ta’ smigħ regolari, billi dawn jippermettulhom li jisimgħu l-esperti u jagħmlu diskussjonijiet dwar kwistjonijiet ewlenin. On 1 December, the IMCO Committee, in association with the ENVI Committee, will hold a public hearing on sustainable public procurement. The aim of the hearing is to determine how using the full potential of public buying can help to achieve goals of the European Green Deal. Green public procurement has the potential to be a key tool for sustainable procurement as Europe's public authorities are major consumers (14% GDP annually).

On 8 November, IMCO organised a public hearing on “Whistle-blower’s testimony on the negative impact of big tech companies’ products on users”. The former Facebook product manager Ms Frances Haugen was invited to testify before IMCO Members and Members of other Committees involved in the current legislative work on digital files, namely ITRE, JURI, LIBE, INGE, AIDA and ECON.

On 28 October, the IMCO Committee held a public hearing on dual quality of goods in the Single Market. The aim of this hearing is to provide an overview of the state of play on ‘dual quality’.

On 27 September 2021, IMCO held a Public Hearing on "Consumer protection and automated decision-making tools in a modern economy".

On 6 September, Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE), welcomed Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager to its meeting. Members questioned her on the Commission's digital policies, such as the DSA and the EU strategy on data.

On 21 June 2021, IMCO held a Public Hearing on „Regulations of online platforms and digital service providers in the digital single market: ensuring effective protection of European consumers in the digital economy (DSA/DMA)“.

The EU and the UK have concluded a deal to serve as the basis for trade and cooperation following the country's departure from the Union. But what does this mean in practice? What does it cover? And how does it affect Europeans?

On 26 May IMCO held a Public Hearing on the topic of the implications that the implementation of the Agreements that lay down the future relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom will have on the EU’s Internal Market and on the Customs Union, matters that are under the responsibility of IMCO Committee.

On Monday 10 May, from 15.45 to 18.45, INGE committee had consideration of the new working document and talks with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. ITRE and IMCO committees were associated to the hearing with online platform representatives.

On 13 April, the INGE Special Committee organised, in association with the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), a hearing on "Interference through advertisement".


On 18 March, the IMCO Committee will hold a public hearing on consumer protection in the context of digitalisation of retail financial services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the digital revolution and in particular the ever growing online shopping sector, we notice a shift in advertising, moving from the traditional concept of a "consumer" to the "user" of websites, online platforms and social media. Users are often subject to targeted advertising that can influence their choice and constitute profiling. While advertising via traditional channels has to abide by strict rules, digital advertisement is vastly unregulated.

The aim of the hearing was to hear the views of stakeholders (business and consumers associations) and academia on the need to review the Product Liability Directive and on related challenges in the new digital age. It allowed participants to present their views on whether the overall liability regime is adequate to facilitate the uptake of the new technologies, and to address the matter from different perspectives.
