Next TRAN meeting

In the context of the exponential growth of COVID-19, the EP President has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the EP to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that EP's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Meetings will be with remote participation for Members. Other participants can follow the meeting through webstreaming.

Thus, the next TRAN meeting will take place on Wednesday 14 April 2021 from 9.00 to 11.00, from 11.00 to 12.00 (coordinators), from 13.45 to 15.45 and from 16.15 to 18.15 and on Thursday 15 April 2021 from 9.30 to 12.30. Votes will be taken in the form of the alternative electronic voting system (remote vote). The voting is scheduled to take place on 14 April 2021 from 13h45 to 15h00 and on 15 April 2021 from 12.25 to 13h45.

TRAN will hold an exchange of views with the Director General of DG GROW Kerstin Jorna on the situation facing the tourism sector ahead of the upcoming summer season. It has been over a year since the tourism sector was hit hard by the pandemic. Many companies went dormant or out of business; others are trying to find new ways to stay afloat by reinventing themselves and their ways of doing business.

Also, the initiatives that the Commission plans to take in 2021 to make the transport sector smarter and more sustainable and thus emerging stronger from the current pandemic situation will be discussed. MEPs want a safer and more sustainable tourism after Covid-19. Tourism will need help to become cleaner, safer and more sustainable after the pandemic, according to MEPs. They will vote during the next Plenary session on a report on Establishing an EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism on 25 March.

Matthew Baldwin, EU Road Safety Coordinator, addressed the TRAN Committee to give an update of the major steps forward in road safety at EU level. The focus was on the Stockholm Declaration on Road Safety and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy at EU level, confirming all aspects of the EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2019 and putting an emphasis on linking “sustainable” and “safe” policies.
